History buffs digging for their roots find the Sweet Home Genealogical Library is the perfect place to begin the search! This non-profit organization is here to help bridge the gap between generations by striving to preserve heritage for historical and educational purposes.
Located at 1223 Kalmia Street in downtown Sweet Home, a generous donation by the Jerry Mealey Estate has enabled our community to be one of the few societies to maintain a contemporary facility specific to genealogical research. Currently, the vast library claims over 3,500 books and almost 80 years worth of the local newspaper on microfilm and bound editions; it also maintains microfilm and microfiche on various subjects including the latest index of Oregon death, marriage and divorce records. The new facility also possesses a computer lab with three terminals to access CDs including Family Tree Maker and, for a nominal fee, several internet research subscription websites.
The organization hosts a popular workshop annually (on the third weekend in March) to meet the demands of this popular activity; in addition, they are providing expanded services and research opportunities through the creation of a website.
Open Tuesday through Saturday and after hours by appointment, the friendly staff of volunteers will be happy to aid the beginner as well as the expert researcher bring their ancestors into focus while leaving a legacy to those who follow.
